Pop Music's Influence on the Vote

When the buzz surrounds which chart-topping artists are getting behind a president candidate or what tunes are on a hopeful's iPod, there is a pretty clear indication of the power of popular music in shaping our perceptions.

Would you make an important decision based on a candidate's love of Kanye West over Merle Haggard? And what do these choices really mean? You be the judge.

Campaign Music

Previous generations of the U.S. electorate apparently rallied to vote after hearing the thrilling strains of "Get on the Raft with Taft," "The Taft Two-Step," and "Line up for [Williams Jennings] Bryan", but the current candidates tend to lean toward solid-gold certified, time-honored hits.

These choices haven't been without a few speedbumps. In a couple of well-publicized cases, artists, whose loyalties belong to the other guy, have attempted to stop a candidate from using their music on the campaign trail. And sometimes, lyrics ("he never learned to read or write so well, but he could play a guitar just like ringin' a bell") don't really fit.

John McCain

"Johnny B. Goode" – Chuck Berry
"Take a Chance on Me" – ABBA
"Our Country" - John Mellencamp

Barack Obama

"Better Way" – Ben Harper
"Think" – Aretha Frankin
"Waiting on the World to Change" – John Mayer
