New Jersey's Calvary Chapel Old Bridge is an expansive church with dozens of ministries, from a biker's group to a graphics ministry. Shure envoy Doug Gould, also a resident of the Garden State, introduced us to Dennis Mitchell, the church's Technical Director.

and Paul Lawrence
CCOB hosts a radio program, podcasts, worship services, of course, and a number of special events. Where do you fit in?
I'm involved in the Wired! Ministry (Audio/Video) and the Captured! (Photography) Ministry.
You must have an on-site crew. How large is it and do the various staffers work on specific assignments or does everyone get a chance to learn?
There are three of us on staff who work in the Wired! Ministry. We handle audio and video production and post production. We have over 20 volunteers who get to work with the wonderful gear that the Lord has provided. They handle production and post production as well.
In this issue, we're talking about live sound speech miking fundamentals. Can you pick one application and tell us how you solved a miking problem?
The most recent issue we had involved a new mic for our podium. We had been using an AKG C747 mic for years. But when we installed a new sound system, the acoustical patterns changed and we weren't getting the gain before feedback we were hoping for.
I asked Doug Gould from Shure his recommendation and he introduced me to the Microflex® series. We tried one and fell in love with it. We got the richness we wanted and the pattern was perfect for our new speaker system. I couldn't be happier with its tonality.
Given the importance of intelligibility, what have you done to improve it?
We had our system designed specifically for our room and it was tweaked for us by Consolidated Audio and SLS Loudspeakers.
Sources inform us that you're a big fan of Shure Microflex mics.
I am a big fan and that's because the quality of the mic, the tightness of the pattern and the richness it achieves. It's phenomenal and we're also very pleased with the price point.
What other Shure mics do you have?
Besides the Microflex MX418/S, we have SM57s and SM58®s, and Beta 58®s as part of our Shure wireless system.
Any tips on speech miking?
Be careful with speaker and mic placement. Choose the microphone that's best for your application, keeping in mind the appropriate pickup pattern for your situation. I place a high importance on my podium mics because they are critical in getting the Word of God out as intelligibly as possible.
In 1984, Calvary Chapel Old Bridge was a small group of congregants meeting in a grade school gymnasium. Today, CCOB serves residents of the New York and New Jersey metropolitan area at its sprawling campus and through it's Bridging the Gap broadcast ministries.
