Outfitting the Portable Church:

Gear to Go
While most mobile congregations meet in high school auditoriums or gymnasiums, every church has different gear needs, based not only on venue, but on the number of worshippers.

Think of it this way: If you’re just getting started and have 30 or 40 members per service meeting in a small conference room or classroom, you probably don’t need much in the way of sound reinforcement. But as that number approaches 75, the need for good sound (combining the building blocks of fidelity, intelligibility and audibility) at the back of the room becomes a factor.

There are no standard solutions. But to get you started thinking about the basics, here’s what Pete van der Harst (see “Viewing the Landscape” in this issue) and his crew at Portable Church Industries recommend for start-ups holding services for 75-300 congregants:

Note: Every church, even the smallest, will have video gear that includes projection equipment, VCRs, DVDs, video cameras, projection screens and the necessary cables, cords and racks. Beyond the electronics are other must-haves that run the gamut from signs and banners to disposable communion cups and antibacterial wipes for children’s rooms. Portable Church Industries, for instance, offers soup-to-nuts packages that include all of these.
