Last December, we polled our readers on a number of subjects relating to Shure Notes® for Houses of Worship. One of the subjects was “subjects”. We wanted to know what you wanted to know about.

The responses poured in and covered requests for a wide variety of topics – from microphone positioning, EQ setting and feedback solutions to recruitment tips, impedance discussions and studio techniques. Success stories. Engineer interviews. Practical information.
Many of you indicated that audio education is valuable and the more the better. Shure Notes for Houses of Worship is one educational vehicle to help you in your quest for knowledge and we decided to dedicate this issue to other resources that are available to help you and your team make sound decisions.

We'll be looking at:
  • Magazine, Books & DVDs
  • Online Resources
  • Seminars & Workshops

To help us navigate our way through the vast and growing archives of available educational material , we once again enlisted Shure Associate Doug Gould, himself a musician, audio pro and churchman.

Consider this a short list. Depending on the level of your expertise and the breadth of your needs and interests, this is a starting point bound to include resources already known to you. And let’s not forget two other sources of practical information — colleagues on sound crews at other churches and your local sound contractor. They’ve been there, done that.

Magazines, Books & DVDs
There’s nothing quite as durable, sharable or economical as the printed (or digital media) materials. Not surprisingly, the explosive growth of CCM has spawned dozens of magazines specifically geared to the house or worship audience. Here are a few examples:

Online Resources
It hardly seems possible that only ten years ago, most of us still thought of the Internet as something for nerds and researchers. We asked ourselves why anyone would actually need a website.

Google® aside (just type in “microphone types” and find 9.4 million entries; an article in a past issue of Shure Notes, we’re happy to report, is the third listing), there are now limitless resources online.

Here are two excellent websites:
Church Sound Check
This is a very robust service offered as part of Curt Taipale’s consulting service. The site offers dozens of helpful articles written in an easy-to-understand style. They also offer a discussion group, job listings and their own bibliography of helpful resources.

ProSound Web
Associated with Live Sound International and Church Sound magazine, this is a web community for all aspects of the professional sound industry including features on live sound, installed sound, recorded sound, lighting, and industry business trends. The Church Sound portal offers a forum, project profiles and archives of editorial features from Technologies for Worship and a free e-zine version of Church Sound.

Seminars and Workshops
We could devote an entire issue, or several issues, to the growing list of national, regional and local events that are dedicated to improving your church’s worship experience. And it’s true that you’ll need to set aside a bigger budget for these forays, but it’s also true that there’s no substitute for the learning benefits of hands-on training, or the opportunity to share your challenges and your passions with others just like you. The following are a good sampling of what is out there, with comments from Shure’s own Doug Gould.

By the way, you can find a list of seminars, events and workshops in which Shure participates by checking out Walking the Talk in this and every Shure Notes for Houses of Worship issue.
